REVIEW USDr. Christina Marcelus is a board-eligible dermatologist and physicianscientist, set to graduate from Emory University School of Medicine’s Dermatology Residency in June 2025. Originally from New York, she has built a career defined by leadership, innovation, and a commitment to expanding access to dermatologic care. She has a strong interest in Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS), complex medical dermatology, and skin of color, while also excelling in surgical dermatology and actively expanding her expertise in cosmetic procedures to provide well-rounded, comprehensive care. She is also passionate about general medical dermatology, caring for a wide range of patients with diverse skin conditions.
Born into a first-generation Haitian American family, Dr. Marcelus forged her own path to medicine, overcoming financial and systemic barriers to become a trailblazer in dermatology. She earned her medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University and holds a Master’s in Biotechnology from Brandeis University. She has conducted impactful research in skin cancer at Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center (DF/HCC), Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK), and the National Cancer Institute at the NIH, with findings published in Genome Medicine and the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
Beyond research, Dr. Marcelus is a dynamic leader, serving as the National Medical Association Dermatology Section Resident Representative, where she works to increase diversity and mentorship opportunities within the field. She has been awarded multiple competitive research and travel grants, underscoring her contributions to advancing dermatologic knowledge and education. She is also the founder and co-director of a pro bono laser tattoo removal clinic for survivors of human trafficking and gang affiliation, helping patients start fresh by removing visible reminders of past trauma. She believes in the power of skin and appearance in the healing process, restoring confidence and creating new opportunities for her patients.
As a Chief Resident, she has spearheaded Grand Rounds, mentored trainees, and expanded educational opportunities for future dermatologists. She also played a pivotal role in launching the first dedicated HS clinic in Atlanta at Grady Memorial Hospital, helping to refine treatment approaches for this often-mismanaged condition.
Dr. Marcelus’s career goals include expanding access to dermatologic care through telemedicine and leveraging technology to reach underserved populations. She is committed to providing expert, compassionate dermatologic care that blends medical, surgical, and cosmetic treatments to help patients achieve healthy, confident skin.
